Last Friday was National Coming Out Day and it has been incredibly heartwarming to read so many different people’s very personal coming out stories. While sifting through the news headlines on any given day it would be easy to lament all the ways in which we still seem to be “missing the mark” as a species. It is clear we still struggle with granting members of our own human communities the grace and respect they intrinsically deserve. Only now are we beginning to wake up to the fundamental notion that all beings, human and non-human, desire and deserve love, kindness and good will. Yet, as painfully slow this progress may feel the culture is changing and ultimately for the better. If we step back for a minute and look at how far we have come in only 50 short years the rate at which our understanding and acceptance of each others differences is quite astounding.
So when we came across this video from Betty Crocker we couldn’t help but feel our hearts swell with hope and joy for where the culture might be headed. Of course as baking companies go our food philosophies couldn’t be more different but it appears we have more in common than first impressions might presume. As wholesome as apple pie, we all grew up with Betty in our home kitchens and probably can’t even count the number of birthday cakes she provided us as kids. This video truly goes to show that you can’t always judge a cake by the box it comes in and even the most ubiquitous of cultural institutions are susceptible to the heart-opening powers of love, justice and equality for all.
Thank you Betty Crocker for “coming out” in support of the LGBT community and our families!
